Introducing: Health MOTs

The importance of regular health checks

The latest research suggests that for those having an NHS Health Check every 5 years:
• 1 person in every 30-40 will be diagnosed with high blood pressure
• 1 person in every 80-200 will be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
• 1 person in every 6-10 will be identified as being at high risk of cardiovascular disease
By having a Health MOT every 6-12 months, you could identify warning signs even earlier and take control of your health.

At OneWellness, we help people of all ages and abilities to take control of their wellbeing. We believe prevention is key, so we’re offering a new service at our Harrogate club for members and non-members which helps you to be more aware of your health and how to manage it.

Our Health MOTs can show you key data about your health and fitness, showing areas where you may need to make lifestyle changes. If you’re ready to make a change, but you don’t know how, this could be the guidance you need to improve your wellbeing.

What is a Health MOT?

A Health MOT is a 20-minute appointment that will highlight key areas of your health. It includes seven tests, undertaken by our highly trained Health Coaches.

The seven tests are:

  • Your total cholesterol result
  • Your risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Your blood pressure reading
  • Your resting heart rate
  • The percentage of oxygenated blood travelling through your body
  • A kardia ECG check which will detect whether you have atrial fibrillation which is one of the major risk factors for stroke
  • A dipstick urine test which can test for kidney disease, glucose levels and urinary tract infection

Throughout the confidential assessment, your Health Coach will discuss your results with you in detail, empowering you to take positive steps to benefit your health and wellbeing. You will receive an information pack highlighting further prevention advice and signposting for support, and be fully supported to understand your results.

How will a Health MOT benefit me?

Health MOTs are designed to assess the risk of potential medical conditions, and spot early warning signs.

The OneWellness Clubs Health MOT is different to a standard appointment with your primary care doctor. You should speak to your primary care doctor about any specific health concerns. A Health MOT is intended for people who may or may not have symptoms currently, but want to be empowered with knowledge about their own health.

Even if you feel well, you may still be at risk of lifestyle diseases. For example, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can be warning signs of cardiovascular disease, yet often carry no obvious symptoms. A Health MOT can give you indicators of how to lower your risk for disease.

How does this differ from an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is offered to adults without pre-existing health conditions aged between 40-74 every 5 years. It’s important to attend your NHS Health Check when invited, as it can detect early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, or dementia.

Health can change in a matter of weeks, so attending a Health MOT at OneWellness every 6-12 months ensures that you remain up-to-date and in control of your health throughout your life. Our checks are open to everyone aged over 18, so you don’t need to wait until you turn 40 to understand your risk factors.
