World Mental Health Day 2021: #DoOneThing with OneWellness Club Harrogate

Sunday 10th October 2021 is World Mental Health day #WMHD2021. The last year has highlighted health, economic and social inequalities on a global scale.

This year, OneWellness Clubs are supporting the theme of ‘Mental Health in an unequal world’ by highlighting how inequality can be addressed to ensure people are able to enjoy good mental health #DoOneThing. If we all do one thing, we can change everything.

Everyone has mental health and as with physical health, it doesn’t stay the same. At any given time one in four people experience mental ill health. However, this year many more people are experiencing poorer mental health or a mental health problem. Health concerns, physical and social isolation, job losses and an environment of constant change and uncertainty are contributing to this. While some people will bounce back quickly, others may need support to feel better again. OneWellness is here to support your journey to improved mental and physical wellbeing.

Our OneWellness Club in Harrogate offers a tranquil environment to improve both physical and mental wellbeing through expert led classes and is home to a local community of mind and body wellbeing enthusiasts both in our members and instructors. We embed mental wellbeing, mindfulness and resilience into everything we do and have developed a timetable of classes including gentle yoga, Pilates and gentle fit to name a few which range from beginner level to advanced all with the intention of boosting both our physical and mental wellbeingOur coaches bring awareness of the mind body connection to each class and welcome members to feel connected with others which is another important aspect to improving mental wellbeing. Social connection is an added extra when attending a OneWellness class and we believe our friendly, personal and welcoming club brings people together with compassion, consideration and an understanding of how to work with individuals on their wellbeing journey.

OneWellness recently held a Festival of Wellbeing providing taster classes from highly active to calm and balanced such as mindfulness yoga and guided meditation. These sessions proved a success with attendees reporting how they felt relaxed from head to toe so we shall be adding more of these classes to our timetable.

We hear so often how exercise can play a vital role in improving mood, releasing happy chemicals in the brain known as dopamine and improving our mental wellbeing. To be physically active, means to sit less and move more which allows flexibility towards the type of movement we choose and allows us to control how little or how much we partake in movement. Movement creates space to declutter unwanted noise and worries and provides an opportunity to mindfully concentrate on the activity in hand.

Let’s also touch on nutrition as we have all heard of the saying ‘you can’t out train a bad diet’ meaning nutrition is as important as the time we spend moving our bodies and the two go hand in hand. Our qualified personal trainer Megan Brooks, is also able to offer nutrition advice which is another tick on the wellbeing checklist. What we eat can play a huge role in how we feel about ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally so having a good understanding of how to eat well and move intuitively, are aspects of your wellbeing we can support.
